Exam ASTAM Advanced Short-Term Actuarial Mathematics
✓ I passed this exam. Everything below is from the inside.
My honest verdict
“The exam that made me an ASA. Written-answer format changes everything: partial credit exists, so showing structured work matters as much as final numbers. Credibility theory and reserving finally click here. This is real insurance mathematics.”
How I’d study for ASTAM today
The format shift is the whole game. After five multiple-choice exams, written-answer rewards different habits:
- Show structure, always. State the method, define the notation, then compute. Graders award partial credit for correct setups even when arithmetic slips.
- Practice writing solutions by hand, fully, from your first month, not just “I know how I’d do this.”
- Learn the grading rubric’s voice from the published sample solutions: what earns points is visible and learnable.
Content centers of gravity
Loss models (severity, frequency, aggregate), credibility theory (Bühlmann and Bühlmann, Straub will appear, know them cold), and short-term reserving techniques. If FAM-S felt rushed, re-solidify it first; ASTAM assumes it.
After this exam
For me, ASTAM completed the exam requirements for the ASA. If you’re on the same track: VEE credits and the modules are the remaining pieces, plan them in parallel so the credential doesn’t wait on paperwork.
