Exam FAM Fundamentals of Actuarial Mathematics
✓ I passed this exam. Everything below is from the inside.
My honest verdict
“The volume exam. Nothing in FAM is as conceptually hard as P, but the syllabus is enormous, spanning life contingencies and short-term insurance mathematics. The battle is coverage and retention, not difficulty.”
How I’d study for FAM today
FAM merges what used to be parts of two exams, so treat it as two syllabi with one sitting:
- FAM-L (life): survival models, life insurance and annuity valuation, premiums, reserves.
- FAM-S (short-term): severity/frequency models, aggregate losses, credibility basics, pricing and reserving for short-term coverages.
My structure: alternate weeks between L and S rather than doing all of one first, by the end, both halves are equally fresh. Budget more calendar time than you did for P or FM (I’d plan 4 to 5 months alongside work or school), and lean hard on spaced repetition for the formula load; this is the exam where Anki earns its place.
The trap
Finishing the syllabus with three weeks left and discovering the first half has evaporated. Retention is the exam. Review cycles are not optional extras, they’re the plan.
