My honest verdict
“The friendliest front door to the profession. Interest theory rewards careful, systematic work more than raw talent, which makes FM the exam I recommend first to career changers and anyone whose calculus is rusty.”
How I’d study for FM today
FM is about cash flows on a timeline. Every question (annuities, bonds, loans) reduces to drawing the timeline correctly.
- Draw everything. For your first hundred problems, physically sketch the timeline. The errors FM punishes are almost always timing errors, not math errors.
- Master the calculator. The BA II Plus TVM worksheet turns many 3-minute problems into 45-second ones. Practice until the keystrokes are muscle memory.
- Then volume, then simulation, same as any prelim: adaptive question banks, wrong-answer journal, timed exams in the final stretch.
The traps
- Annuity-due vs annuity-immediate. Half the wrong answers on this exam are one payment period off. Slow down on the first line, not the last.
- Memorizing without the timeline. Formulas rearranged under pressure betray you; timelines don’t.
FM first?
If you’re a career changer or your calculus is more than three years cold: yes, FM before P. A pass on the scoreboard changes your confidence and your resume immediately.
