My honest verdict

“The bridge to modern actuarial work. GLMs, time series, clustering, trees. This is the exam that most resembles what analysts actually do all day. If you enjoy SRM, you'll enjoy the job.”

How I’d study for SRM today

SRM is concepts over computation: many questions test whether you understand what a method does, when it fails, and how to read its output.

  1. Read An Introduction to Statistical Learning (free) alongside your manual. The intuition chapters are better than any summary.
  2. For every method (GLM, ridge/lasso, trees, PCA, k-means, ARIMA), be able to answer three questions cold: what problem does it solve, what are its assumptions, and how do you interpret its output?
  3. Learn to read R output fluently. The exam shows you regression summaries; knowing where the p-values and deviances live is free points.

The connection to your career

SRM pairs naturally with Exam PA. Take them in that order, close together, while the material overlaps. Together they’re also the strongest interview talking points a student has: you can discuss real modeling with hiring managers.
